Positive registration trends in key month of March
Data just released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show UK van and truck registrations: at 38,900 in March and down 25.0% to 225,388 for the rolling year.  Trucks were down 37.5% to 32,471 for the rolling year with 4,209 registrations in March.  The same month saw 34,691 vans registered, with 192,917 for the rolling year, down 22.4%. "March 2010 saw some welcome improvement in UK van registrations with the third successive month of growth.  Truck registrations remain extremely low, reflecting last winter's deeply depressed demand," said Paul Everitt, chief executive at the SMMT.  "The situation reflects a hesitant recovery though demand is still very low with continued uncertainty in key segments of the market. Manufacturers and dealers will look for more and better priced credit to help strengthen demand in the coming months."

70-truck stand at show
Search Impex says it expects to show over 70 trucks on its stand 5804 at the CV Operator Show.  "We'll have a very wide range there, from light urban delivery trucks to a massive rig designed to carry wind turbine towers," said Jim Newsome, managing director.  "We've always done well at shows like this and expect to sell trucks off the stand and take orders for many more."  The family firm often has more trucks on its stand than all the big truck makers combined; virtually all are in operator liveries and many are limited edition collector's items, usually at around 1:50 scale.

Cube routes
Iveco set the cat among the van pigeons a month or so ago by claiming that its new Daily and EcoDaily line-up included "the largest panel van on the UK market" (Transport News Briefs 3 and 4). Now, as promised, Commercial Vehicle Engineer has followed this up with an investigation into how various van-makers measure load volumes and present the figures.  How much faith can you put in the van cubic capacity figures you have been quoted?  And would it not make more sense to forget about maximum load volume anyway and just concentrate on other critical van dimensions?  Commercial Vehicle Engineer answers these and many more questions on light commercial vehicle engineering and operation in its April edition, now online at www.cvengineer.com

Fitch fuel catalyst saves 5.3%
Fuel Harmonics plc will use stand 5467 at the CV Operator show to launch its Fitch Fuel Catalyst.  The firm says it just won a deal with the Road Haulage Association to have its 'Fitch Fuel Catalyst' sold in the RHA's on-line Hauliers Shop.  Fuel Harmonics is the UK dealer for the device, which delivered a 5.3% fuel saving in tests at the Millbrook Proving Ground recently.  "The device simply fits in your truck's fuel line," said the firm's Roger MacNair.  "It can deliver startling results in transcontinental, bulk, retail, waste management, 7.5 tonne delivery and multi-drop vehicles."

Some stability in March, but outlook still weak
The latest data from the SMMT show big bus registrations down 32% in the first quarter of this year compared to quarter one last year and big coaches up 5.6% over the same period.  Smaller, 3.5 to 5 tonne buses rose 80% in March.  "March delivered some stability in registrations across the sector," said Paul Everitt, the SMMT's chief executive.  "Orders remain well down, despite some resilience so the outlook for the bus and coach sector is very weak, particularly for manufacturers dependent on UK demand.  The Spring brought its normal rise in big coach registrations, but this is from a very low base and reflects orders won last year."

Sadler Consultants says there are over 160 Low Emission Zones in 11 countries in Europe, in big cities and smaller towns alike, so the firm has come up with a single website which "gives you all the information you need on Low Emission Zones in one place - and in your language."
