The plate on the post says 'pay at meter'  and points up the street.

However, there is no meter, just the base where the cash box is. (the back box on the pavement).

So would you park in the bays or not?

No --not worth the hassle. Some of these wardens would love to stick it on a driving school car. Just think of all the letter writing and phone calls. Anyway walking is good for you and the westie Dave. toothy9

Yes, park.  You've got your camera with you, so if you return to find a ticket take a few snaps and dig your feet in.

I would park if I knew where the next available machine was located otherwise I would not take the chance.

See here, a missing meter would be the same as one marked 'out of order':

I'm not sure it would be judged as 'out of order'  as there is no machine there.     And you could not use any other machine as it's only a short  street with a few bays and there are no other machines in the street.

All the roads around are double yellows.

I think the local traffic order requiring payment to park is in force whether a mechanism to pay is working (or in place) or not. I think this is why the advice from parking appeals says do not park when the machine is out of order. It would also apply to machine missing, the requirement to pay is still there.

Find another meter to make your payment. They're usually not far away.

There is no other machine in that street, it's only a short one.

And all the other roads have no waiting restrictions  so there are no other meters anywhere near.

Well that's it then you're just going to have to let a tyre down and put a sign up saying "Waiting for the AA man"

PARK !! If you were to get a ticket, it would be like them saying ' not parked within the confinds of a parking place ' , when there are no markings
