Hi Folks,

Have any of you tried the new shape Renault Megane with a view to teaching in it. Having had 2 of the previous shape, ('05 & '57 plates) & found them to be almost perfect for the job, as I have v long legs, am hoping the new one will be as utilitarian.
There is always the possibility that dual controls cannot be fitted!

Salut,

Hi BigAl,

Noted you had only made 3 posts so thought you might be new poster against someone who looks in more than you post. If you are a new member/poster - then WELCOME -  wav icon_thumright

Can't really help with the car enquiry as I do not have one - other than to say I had the use of one (08 plate) for a fleet training day not too long ago - big and roomy - responsive - but thought it drank the fuel very quickly - possibly because it was a 2 litre!!

Do any of you use the Mazda 3 & what do you think of it. Speedo seems to be down a tunnel & silly space-saver spare!

How do you folks cope with only having 'space-savers'. Do you carry a proper spare on test days?

I remember having one of the first Toyota Yaris's which had the same kind of speedo. Never bothered me or the examiners either.

Didn't have a second speedo fitted to it.

My current car has a really skinny little space saver and I do carry a full sized spare, but only on a test day.

The 207 Verve has a repair kit - just attach to valve and activate - so no spare at all.

I have got one in the garage for a 206 with brand new tyre if anyone is interested -

Ok, so you get a screw in the tyre, in the hour or so, before a test, will this diy repair kit be sufficient to wing the test duration?

Allan,

I have a spacesaver but don't carry a full sized spare. There is always going to be the possibility that something untoward will happen prior to test. I just accept that it might ,rather like the bulbs scenario in the past and see little point in losing sleep over it.

I wish you hadn't brought this up  laughing7

I,ve got new the new shape Fiesta which as standard comes without a spare but with a repair kit similar to one mentioned by Barry.
I chose to pay for a full sized steel spare (for which there is space under the boot carpet)  - it's not just for tests, I want to be able to change a wheel and carry on teaching. I dont think I would want to carry on with a "repaired" tyre.

My old Mini had a repair kit. No spare at all. It never worried me until a pupil managed to clip a jagged kerb and put a hole in the sidewall of the tyre.
I was there for hours waiting for the RAC!

Hi Allan

I would not want to risk it to be fair, as yet I do not have a replacement but I will be investigating once this snow and ice has disappeared.

Thanks for all your replies guys but am no closer to finding the most functional car that will replace my much beloved renault megane II that is no longer produced. BangHead

I hear what you are, generally, saying i.e. don't let a space saver get you down. But my reality is that, if possible, I strive to cover all contingencies which, for 27 years as an ADI, I have managed, even to the extreme of having a spare dual-control car.

Thus I need a car bigger than the Fiesta, because I am a taller than average dude with growing young child who needs space in the back when my seat is right back. We will also use it for holidays so needs adequate boot space & yes I also want a proper goddam spare tyre. I want to be able to change the light bulbs without having to take it to a workshop. I would much prefer being able to view the speedo aswell.

So far the only car that ticks these boxes is the Skoda Octavia but do feel it to be large enough to be off-putting to new clients. Although over the years I have used some largish cars & to my knowledge have suffered no negative backlash of any substance other than a superficial whinge. However, none were quite the size of the Octavia.

I hear Ford are producing a new Focus so I will defer any compromise/firm decision making till having thoroughly inspected this tenuous possibility. However, I am not expecting to be wowed.

Yep, after all these years of being victim to the DSA's inability to move with the 'real world' & modernise, this being one of their favourite hypocrisies, I feel weighed down like Sisyphus.

Ok, so I may have to compromise to a 'space-saver et al' but has it ever been put to the DSA that, just as they no longer check the front headlights, they could also employ a 'tell me' question for the breaklights aswell & just what are their grounds for refusing the 'space-saver' that the majority of them will have in the boots of their cars ?!

Kind Regards to you all.

A ranting & still prepared to fight,

HI Allan,

The reason why space savers are not allowed is that they are for speeds up to 80km or 50 mph. The rescue kit I have not read but I suspect that it might be the same, save that if a puncture is repaired you are restricted to 70 and plugging the inside with all that gunge is almost the same as a rubber bung for a puncture. I will need to investigate it.

The Octavia has a little sister of which the name escapes me - maybe youcould look at that. It is the size of the Audi A3, bearing in mind they are made by the same people now... Seat are also a possibility - again it is in the VW house so a good motor - we have had a Seat  people carrier when our kids were small and that was a very good vehicle

Little sister is the 'Fabia' which is probably as good as the 'Octavia' however due to it's ugliness, must have been designed by an eastern-bloc depressive, I cannot bring myself to consider it.

The Citroen C4, though a bit tinny, aint bad & even has a proper spare. I would fear for it's reliability. Any input on this would be appreciated.

Kia Cee'd also not bad but alas.....space-saver.

The quest continues but the despondency deepens.

Hi Alan,

The alternative option (imho) might be to be cheeky with the dealer of your choice and say you WANT a real spare as part of the deal if you are to be convinced by them to buy their product....

E.G. - my wife went back to Curry's about our LCD TV which has shadows (4 of them) down the screen. We bought a 3 year warranty to run consecutively after expiration of the one year warranty... however in the VERY SMALL PRINT it says we do not provide a replacement if a TV is away for repair... ours will be away for 14 days.

My wife went back in (after we had talked about the options) and spoke to the manager telling him we have been mis-sold the insurance (having just had a bit of compensation from Halifax for the same thing with endowment policies) we knew we were on solid ground.  She struck a compromise with him in that we have purchased a replacement, which he will buy back at the price paid once the repair is completed to our satisfaction. In effect he is loaning us a TV.

Being sure of ones grounds or being cheeky may have the same end result - give it a whizz - you never know for the sake of a few quid on their part they could get a decent sale ...

Sorry to be so long with an update to my holy-grail quest.

Well have, at last, ordered a car. I accept you may all think me reckless but it will be the Skoda Octavia SE 1.6 TDI. The clincher being that it was VAT free provided it was ordered before end March. Ok so this was about 4 weeks ago & for this I apologise; have simply been working silly hours.
