DIDU officially seceded from its association with Unite the Union and released the following statement.

The Re-Birth of DIDU

Delivering Information – Developing Understanding

The Driving Instructors Democratic Union was established in 2004 as a organisation to represent the interests of its members, ordinary working Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs) across the United Kingdom. Through its early life there were ups and downs and changes undertaken to ensure its safe passage through what were turbulent early times. As a result DIDU became a Branch of TGWU.
It became apparent that being a Branch of a much larger Union was not necessarily in DIDU’s best interests as our needs as self employed ADIs was not always a good fit with those of normal company employees. Frank discussions failed to fully resolve the issues so a decision was taken to ballot the membership to seek their views on which direction they would like to take – stay as we were or revert to becoming independent again, having total control of our own destiny.
On the 8th July 2009 the membership made their voice heard and decided to leave the mother Union. On the 10th July Rob Harper, the National Chairman, resigned.

In future DIDU will continue to use our existing name and logo but give a modern meaning as to how we wish to be seen as representative both for and on behalf of our members;

Delivering Information – Developing Understanding

This new start also includes involvement with one of the most prestigious organisations in Europe – The European Road Safety Charter (ERSC) – to which DIDU signed up on the same day as our rebirth; a monumental day for all concerned, forging links with other signatories. From this small step DIDU looks to make other leaps by pushing forwards our aims and goals, not only to make the contribution towards “Killed and Seriously Injured” (KSI) reductions in the UK and Europe but to ensure that the voice of the Approved Driving Instructor is heard loudly and clearly across the United Kingdom.
